Do These Bite Sized Drops Make Bad Breath Stop?
Binaca claims that these re-launched breath drops will kill bad breath-causing germs instantly. Immediately, I imagined the blue liquid spreading in my mouth like soldiers and eradicating any traces of halitosis. (Have you ever seen those mouthwash commercials?)
But, then reality hit and nothing felt killed. After a lifetime of using mouthwash, I expected the Binaca drops to deliver that familiar burn, and I felt cheated when that didn?t happen. The peppermint-flavored drops tasted more sweet then bitter, but after about two minutes, that fresh-breath feeling was gone. It was as if I never even tried them in the first place.
When my (brave) friends checked my breath, they agreed: these drops didn?t deliver. ?At least the bottle?s cute,? I thought. (If anything, the size makes them convenient. At about two inches tall with the width of an index finger, these drops easily fit in my coin purse.)
But in the world of halitosis, cute doesn?t cut it.
The drops are available in Walgreens nationwide, so if you?d still like to give them a try, impulse-shop to your heart?s content.

Can You Moisturize Without the Ick Factor?
Nonetheless, I decided to go to the event because the name ?Hydra IQ? caught my eye on the invitation. I?ve heard plenty of fancy names for beauty products, but I never heard of one referring to its intelligence, so when I saw ?IQ? attached to the word ?Hydra,? I was curious. Did ?IQ? imply that these products are smarter than others? I wondered. But once I saw that Nivea was offering complimentary manicures, I was sold on attending. I figured that pretty nails would console me even if the products turned out to be a disappointment.
Nivea?s Hydra IQ technology claims to penetrate the skin?s layers for even protection and promises to hydrate the skin for more than 24 hours by maintaining the skin?s moisture level. The skin care launch includes four brand-new products, and the ingredients are also included in some of Nivea?s older skin care standbys. I tried three of its brand-new products in total, using at least one daily for two weeks.
I tend to slack off with the lotion when the weather gets warm because I hate when my skin feels greasy and sticky. But because of Nivea?s Express Hydration Freshening Gel, I don?t have that excuse anymore. It was by far my favorite Hydra IQ product because it?s made for the summer! Not only does it absorb quickly (less than two minutes), but its water-based formula makes it very lightweight. Plus, it contains mint extract, which gives your skin a cooling sensation.
I wasn?t as thrilled about Nivea?s Express Hydration Daily Lotion. Sure it kept its promise ? the lotion was fast-absorbing and it did last 24 hours ? but there are dozens of drugstore lotions that do the same thing for less than $8.99.
Out of the three Hydra IQ products I tried, Nivea?s Touch of Cashmere Body Wash was the only one I really didn?t like. The warm scent was too overpowering, and I expected it to be more moisturizing ? especially since the body wash left a slippery residue.
Nivea?s Hydra IQ technology did deliver results, but don?t purchase the entire line if you?re on a budget. The Express Hydrating Freshening Gel was the only product that was worth the fancy moniker, especially with summer heat waves and humidity levels ahead.
You can buy Nivea?s Hydra IQ products in drugstores everywhere.

Estrogen therapy increased risk of developing kidney stones
10,739 postmenopausal women with hysterectomy who received either an estrogen-only treatment or matching placebo and 16,608 postmenopausal women without hysterectomy who received either an estrogen plus progesterone treatment or matching placebo. Data were collected for an average of 7.1 years in the estrogen-only trial and 5.6 years for the estrogen plus progestin trial.
A total of 335 cases of kidney stones were reported in the active treatment groups, while 284 cases occurred in the placebo groups. The beginning demographic characteristics and risk factors for kidney stones were similar in the two groups.
Estrogen therapy was associated with a significant increase in risk of kidney stones. The corresponding annualized incidence rate per 10,000 women per year was 39 in the treatment group and 34 in the placebo group.

red onion diet - remove bad cholesterol
At the same time red onions retain the body's good cholesterol, which help protect against heart disease. Scientists in Hong Kong fed crushed-up red onions to hamsters who had all been put on a high-cholesterol diet.
They found that after eight weeks levels of bad cholesterol, or low density lipoprotein (LDL), had dropped by an average of 20 per cent.
"This results support the claim that the regular consumption of onion reduces the risk of coronary heart disease," the Daily Mail quoted Zhen Yu Chen, who was in charge of the research carried out at the Chinese University of Hong Kong as saying.

Fish oil good against diabetes
Jerrold Olefsky and colleagues identified a key receptor on macrophages abundantly found in obese body fat. Obesity and diabetes are closely correlated. The scientists say omega-3 fatty acids activate this macrophage receptor, resulting in broad anti-inflammatory effects and improved systemic insulin sensitivity.
Obese fat tissue contains lots of these macrophages producing lots of cytokines, which cause inflammation and rising insulin resistance.Olefsky and colleagues eventually narrowed their focus to a G-protein receptor called GPR120, which is found only on pro-inflammatory macrophages in mature fat cells. When the receptor is exposed to omega-3 fatty acids, it is activated and generates a strong anti-inflammatory effect.
"The omega-3 fatty acids switch on the receptor, killing the inflammatory response," said Olefsky
"Our work shows how fish oils safely do this, and suggests a possible way to treating the serious problems of inflammation in obesity and in conditions like diabetes, cancer and cardiovascular disease through simple dietary supplementation.
However, it's not clear how much fish oil constitutes a safe, effective dose. If too high, it could up the risk of to increased risk of bleeding and stroke in some people.

Link between asthma and prostate cancer
Even having asthma appears to increase prostate cancer risk by around 25 per cent. But the chances of a tumour are significantly higher if people start medication, says a Daily Mail report. The study was undertaken by a team of scientists in Melbourne, Australia.
They decided to look at the link between asthma and prostate cancer because both arise from inflammation in the body, according to the journal Cancer Epidemiology , Biomarkers and Prevention.

What Causes Insulin Resistance? Part II
Inflammation
In 1876, a German physician named W Ebstein reported that high doses of sodium salicylate could totally eliminate the signs and symptoms of diabetes in certain patients (Berliner Klinische Wochenschrift. 13:337. 1876). Following up on this work in 1901, the British physician RT Williamson reported that treating diabetic patients with sodium salicylate caused a striking decrease in the amount of glucose contained in the patients' urine, also indicating an apparent improvement in diabetes (2). This effect was essentially forgotten until 1957, when it was rediscovered.

New test for oral cancer detection
The new test would involve removing cells with a brush, placing them on a chip, and inserting the chip into the analyzer, leading to a result in 8-10 minutes. This will have a number of benefits including cutting waiting times and the number of visits, and also cost savings for the NHS.
The team led by Professor Martin Thornhill has begun carrying out clinical trials on patients at Charles Clifford Dental Hospital for two years to perfect the technology and make it as sensitive as possible.
If oral cancer is detected early, the prognosis for patients is excellent, with a five-year survival rate of more than 90 percent.
The nano-bio-chips are disposable and slotted like a credit card into a battery-powered analyzer. A brush-biopsy sample is placed on the card and micro fluidic circuits wash cells from the sample into the reaction chamber.

High fat diet, tobacco cause cancer
According to Lalit Kumar, professor of medical oncology at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), three million cases of cancer globally are due to tobacco use alone, with lung cancer claiming half the victims.
A high fat content diet can lead to breast cancer. Women who do yoga or moderate exercise everyday have lower incidence of cancer as compared to women with sedentary lifestyles and high fat intake, Kumar said at a talk at the India International Centre Wednesday evening.
"A high fat diet also acts as a trigger for prostate cancer. Fried food and spicy food is linked to cancer of the esophagus. Preservatives in food and smoked food, which is eaten in some parts of northeast India, also act as triggers for cancer," he said, adding that high fat intake and low fibre intake can cause colon cancer.
Some fungal infections can lead to liver cancer, while the human papillomavirus has been proven to be the cause of cancer of the cervix. "But the good news is, a vaccine is available and in the next 20 years the incidence of cervical cancer will come down," he said.

A Farewell Toast to Red-Wine Teeth
A couple days ago, I tried to think of a few things worse than being in a social setting, having a few glasses of wine, and ending up with wine-stained teeth. Let?s see, what did I come up with? Running face first into a bee hive, for one. Dashing out of a restaurant only to see your car being towed. Global warming? Ok, maybe not that bad.
It?s not merely the fact that your teeth have lost their pearly white hue that?s embarrassing. It?s more what having red-stained teeth symbolizes ? that you get a little too excited by the thought of wine. So much so, that you?d rather be in a foreign country stomping up and down in a vat of grapes than where you are right now. Or that you?re just a lush.
Up until now, our only solutions were to either stop after one glass (let?s be serious, now) or jet off to the bathroom with toothbrush and toothpaste in hand for a quick touch up. Since both of those options aren?t always convenient, it?s a good thing I stumbled upon a product called ?Wine Wipes,? from the makers Borracha LLC.
Wine Wipes uses a combination of salt, baking soda, hydrogen peroxide, calcium, glycerine, and orange blossom to bleach the teeth, neutralize acids, and provide a coating to protect against future gulps. I was ready to test these babies out!
I pulled them out of my bag one night, thinking that these wipes would come in very handy on a date. Picture it: the conversation is going well ? you both share a love of cats and long walks in the rain ? and he just can?t wait to meet your parents. Then you smile sweetly and watch as his eyes move from your face to your red teeth. And then watch as his face contorts, like he just caught a whiff of something foul.
Thankfully, I wasn?t on a date. I was just at dinner with my friends (read: I don?t care what they think of me. They?re kind of obligated to like me at this point). We all had a couple of glasses of red wine and I pulled out a wipe ? a small, circular, moist pad with one textured side for scrubbing, I assume. What immediately put me off was the taste ? a combination of sour and salty. A friend had tried one as well and mentioned, ecstatically, that they tasted like boiled peanuts.
Strange taste aside, they did seem to clean my teeth. When I looked at the wipe after I had rubbed it over my teeth, it was noticeably redder. And my teeth did look brighter. The wipes also come in a small, discreet case ? easy to take to the bathroom if you?re out in a public setting.
I?ll definitely be keeping Wine Wipes on hand for those occasions I find myself indulging in a few glasses of vino. That or just move to Europe and stomp grapes for a living.
Wine Wipes retail for $6.95 and can be purchased at stores nationwide and online.

Food Palatability and Body Fatness: Clues from Alliesthesia
Some of the most important experiments for understanding the role of food palatability/reward in body fatness were performed by Dr. Michel Cabanac and collaborators in the 1970s (hat tip to Dr. Seth Roberts for the references). In my recent food reward series (1), I referenced but did not discuss Dr. Cabanac's work because I felt it would have taken too long to describe. However, I included two of his studies in my Ancestral Health Symposium talk, and I think they're worth discussing in more detail here.

Complications,difficult labour in pregnancy-chance post-natal depression
Post-natal depression occurs most often in the first three months after delivery and can range from mild symptoms - sometimes called the ?baby blues? - to clinically diagnosed post-natal depression.Women who are not diagnosed early enough can end up suffering for many months or even years.
The analysis of data from almost 5,000 women also revealed that one complication raises the chance of depression but this increases even further if more than one thing goes wrong. The researchers found that women admitted to hospital during their pregnancy had more than twice the risk of post-natal depression as those who stayed out of hospital until delivery time.
Meanwhile, women with pre-eclampsia (linked to high blood pressure) were also more than twice as likely to suffer, the researchers found.

Smoking and ectopic pregnancy
The researchers said Cotinine triggered a reaction, which increased a protein in the Fallopian tubes. The protein, called PROKR1, raised the risk of an egg implanting outside the womb.
PROKR1 allows pregnancies to implant correctly inside the womb, but its presence in the Fallopian tubes is believed to increase the risks of this happening outside the womb.
The study found that women who smoked and developed an ectopic pregnancy had twice as much PROKR1 in their Fallopian tubes as women who did not smoke and had previously had a healthy pregnancy.
Researchers believe that too much of the protein prevents the muscles in the walls of the Fallopian tubes from contracting, which in turn hinders the transfer of the egg to the womb.

Book Review: The End of Overeating
Kessler's book focuses on 1) the ability of food with a high palatability/reward value to cause overeating and obesity, 2) the systematic efforts of the food industry to maximize food palatability/reward to increase sales in a competitive market, and 3) what to do about it. He has not only done a lot of reading on the subject, but has also participated directly in food reward research himself, so he has real credibility. The End of Overeating is not the usual diet book baloney.

Get Rid of Dry Spots Naturally!
The Pomega5 line infuses antioxidants from pomegranates grown in the Mediterranean, and according to one study, pomegranate seed oil can rejuvenate the skin by boosting cell production. In addition to pure Omega 5, The Daily Revitalizing Concentrate Ampoules contains a blend of oils including jojoba, rosehip, and grapefruit oils, a concentration that the makers claim heals the skin by reducing wrinkles, scars, and dark spots.
I used the Daily Revitalizing Concentrate Ampoules twice a day in lieu of my regular moisturizer for three weeks. I tried the ampoules right before bed, while my face was still damp. The first time, I made the mistake of using an entire capsule on my face, which left my skin shiny. (Luckily, I made that mistake at night, because had it been the morning rush, I would've been waiting impatiently for my skin to dry so I could apply makeup.) My skin did absorb most of the oil eventually, but it was still left with a bit too much shine, so I decided to use half a capsule each time in the future.
Once I adjusted my dosage, my concerns about using oil on my face were abated. My skin absorbed the oil in about a minute. Within three days, my face was much smoother, specifically near the corners of my mouth, which gets extremely dry. Also, I noticed that my skin had a glow, though I needed to keep my oil-absorbing sheets handy for my forehead and nose. Unfortunately, these ampoules didn't reduce a small scar on my cheek, which was what I really wanted. (Note: The ampoules are about the size of a pill, and you have to pull at both ends to apply the product. This can get quite tricky if your hands are wet, so keep a pair of scissors nearby if you plan on using the ampoules straight out the shower.)
The Daily Revitalizing Concentrate Ampoules can also be used on cuticles, so I decided to give it a shot. One capsule was enough for all ten fingers, and I was impressed that this product made my cuticles looked softer right away?without leaving an excess of oil behind like other cuticle treatments. The portability of the ampoules was a plus; it took just two minutes to treat both hands while standing on a moving rush-hour subway car.
These ampoules are a good idea if you're looking for a natural product for dry and uneven skin. But if your skin is on the oiler side, follow my lead and use just half at a time. Since these ampoules are essentially oil, it may be best to keep them away from your T-zone if that area tends to get slick. Since my combination skin gets oily during the summer, I won't use this product when the weather gets warmer, but at least I know now what to use next winter.
You can buy the Daily Revitalizing Concentrate Ampoules here.

Losing Fat With Simple Food-- Two Reader Anecdotes
At the Ancestral Health Symposium, I met two Whole Health Source readers, Aravind Balasubramanian and Kamal Patel, who were interested in trying a simple diet to lose fat and improve their health. In addition, they wanted to break free of certain other high-reward activities in their lives that they felt were not constructive. They recently embarked on an 8-week low-reward diet and lifestyle to test the effectiveness of the concepts. Both of them had previously achieved a stable (in Aravind's case, reduced) weight on a paleo-ish diet prior to this experiment, but they still carried more fat than they wanted to. They offered to write about their experience for WHS, and I thought other readers might find it informative. Their story is below, followed by a few of my comments.

Another Simple Food Weight Loss Experience
Consistent with the scientific literature and a number of previous reader anecdotes (2), Sarah experienced a reduction in appetite on the simple food diet, losing 15 pounds in 6 weeks without hunger. In contrast to her prior experiences with typical calorie restriction, her energy level and mood remained high over this period. Here's a quote from her blog:
Well, it looks like the theory that in the absence of nice palatable food, the body will turn quite readily to fat stores and start munching them up, is holding up. At the moment, the majority of the energy I use is coming from my insides, and my body is using it without such quibbles as the increased hunger, low energy, crappy thermo-regulation or bitchiness normally associated with severe calorie restriction.I can't promise that everyone will experience results like this, but this is basically what the food reward hypothesis suggests should be possible, and it seems to work this way for many people. That's one of the reasons why this idea interests me so much.

Secret Santa: Stranger Covers Christmas Layaways
Two Recent Papers by Matt Metzgar
The first paper is titled "The Feasibility of a Paleolithic Diet for Low-income Consumers", and is co-authored by Dr. Todd C. Rideout, Maelan Fontes-Villalba, and Dr. Remko S. Kuipers (1). They found that a Paleolithic-type diet that meets all micronutrient requirements except calcium (which probably has an unnecessarily high RDA) costs slightly more money than a non-Paleolithic diet that fulfills the same requirements, but both are possible on a tight budget.
The second paper is titled "Externalities From Grain Consumption: a Survey", with Matt Metzgar as the sole author (2). He reviews certain positive and negative externalities due to the effects of grain consumption on health. The take-home message is that refined grains are unhealthy and therefore costly to society, whole grains are better, but grains in general have certain healthcare-related economic costs that are difficult to deny, such as celiac disease.
There are a lot of ideas floating around on the blogosphere, some good and others questionable. Composing a manuscript and submitting it to a reputable scientific journal is a good way to demonstrate that your idea holds water, and it's also a good way to communicate it to the scientific community. The peer review process isn't perfect but it does encourage scientific rigor. I think Metzgar is a good example of someone who has successfully put his ideas through this process. Pedro Bastos, who also spoke at the Ancestral Health Symposium, is another example (3).

red onion diet - remove bad cholesterol
